The Red Cross is a humanitarian organization led by volunteers - our primary means of providing relief to victims of disaster and help citizens prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Volunteers represent 97% of our workforce locally, 36:1 nationally.
The American Red Cross does not receive support from the government nor Red Cross National Headquarters for day-to-day operations. Instead, each Chapter is required to support itself and perform its humanitarian mission through fund raising events, private donations and smart fiscal management (on average, 91 cents of every dollar raised goes to our programs and services).
DISASTER RESPONSE. Provide food, clothing, shelter and mental health counseling to victims of disaster 24/7/365. In 2011, we responded to 141 house fires, assisted over 100 families (373 individuals) locally and over 70,000 nationwide. Costs for volunteer training and supplies for disaster preparedness and response averages $150,000 per year ($75,000 per chapter).
HEALTH & SAFETY SERVICES. Prepare citizens to save lives through disaster preparedness and health & safety education – over 40,000 locally, almost 11 million nationwide.
SERVICE TO ARMED FORCES. Provide support to members of the military and their families in times of emergency – over 900 families assisted locally, close to 2 million nationwide.
INTERNATIONAL AID & RESPONSE. Provide international humanitarian aid and assistance in locating missing relatives due to war or natural disaster – our region helped reconnect 6 families with loved ones in foreign lands through information and referrals.

131 years for the American Red Cross national organization and 94 years locally (Lee & Collier County Chapters).
What is your primary product or service?
The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization led by volunteers (500,000+ nationally and 800+ from Collier and Lee Counties, on call 24/7/365) that provide relief to victims and help prevent, prepare for and resond to emergencies. The Red Cross is Congressionally Chartered (but not government funded) and guided by the seven fundamenal principles of the International Red Cross movement (Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Unity, Universality, Voluntary Service).
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
It is not unusual for the Red Cross to respond to simultaneous operations. The Red Cross works year round to be ready to respond effectively to disasters of any size – that’s why it’s so critical for us to have the resources and support to maintain our response levels locally and nationally.
